NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

Know what to check first, what to change next and what to record along the way.

Search for an itchy dog and you get a list of things it might be. Fleas, food, pollen, the washing powder, the season. What you rarely get is an order to work through them in, or a way of writing down what you saw so that week six can be compared with week one.

That is what this workbook is. Four stages, worked through one at a time, with a record sheet for each week and a summary sheet at the end. It will not tell you what is causing the itch. It will help you observe carefully, record consistently, and arrive at your next appointment with something better than memory
  • Start with a structured Week 0 check
  • Record one change at a time
  • Finish with a summary for your veterinarian
  • Instant digital download
  • Clear printable format
  • Read on screen or print at home
  • Personal-use licence

The four-stage process

The workbook is built in four stages. Each one has its own pages, its own record sheets and a clear point at which you move on.

Start to finish, plan for about fifteen weeks. This is the structure the workbook follows. It is a way of organising your own observations - your veterinarian remains the person who interprets them and decides what happens next.
1
Stage One - Environment reset

Two weeks. This workbook begins by looking at what is around your dog while keeping the food steady. Changing several things at once can make the result harder to interpret.

2
Stage Two - Choosing the food and moving across

About one to two weeks. You work through everything your dog has already eaten, choose the trial food, record where you are starting from, and move across gradually rather than in one meal.

3
Stage Three - Eight-week elimination

Eight weeks. Your chosen trial diet is held steady and recorded consistently for eight weeks, with a checkpoint page at Food Week 4. If your veterinarian has already prescribed a therapeutic trial diet, follow that plan and use the workbook to track it.

4
Stage Four - Structured testing

Two to four weeks, sometimes longer. A router asks whether you plan to feed a commercial food again and sends you down the matching path. Each food you test gets its own summary card. Start to finish, plan for about fifteen weeks. This is the structure the workbook follows. It is a way of organising your own observations - your veterinarian remains the person who interprets them and decides what happens next.

MADE FOR REAL LIFE

Built for real life

Most of this book you read once. A small part of it you live in for about fifteen weeks.

The reading is front-loaded. The daily commitment while you are tracking is about ten minutes - short, but it does need to happen most days, because a record with gaps in it is hard to read later.

  • You do not need to print all 58 pages at once.
  • The Start Here page sets out what to print first and what to print as each stage arrives.
  • Designed to be read on screen and completed by hand.
  • It is not an interactive fillable PDF.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

What this is, and what it is not

The Itchy Dog Workbook is an educational tracking tool. It is a structured way to observe and record what you see, and to gather that information for your veterinarian.

  • It is not veterinary advice.
  • It is not a diagnosis.
  • It is not a treatment plan.
  • It does not replace examination by a veterinarian.
  • No result is promised. Outcomes vary from dog to dog.

Itchy skin has many causes, and more than one can be present at the same time. Only a veterinarian who has examined your dog can determine what is happening.

Speak to your veterinarian before you begin

If your dog has raw, weeping, bleeding or infected-looking skin, a hot or painful ear, sudden facial swelling or any difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, sudden weight loss, unusual lethargy, or itching so constant that they cannot settle.

The same applies to puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, older dogs, and any dog with an existing health condition or on prescription medication.

The Itchy Dog Workbook is an educational tracking tool. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition, and it is not a substitute for veterinary advice. If your dog is unwell, in distress, or has broken or infected skin, speak to your veterinarian.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What do I actually receive?

One complete 58-page A4 PDF workbook. It includes the Week 0 triage checklist, two fridge reminder cards, the itch-score guide, the food-history exercise, 15 weekly record sheets, four food-test summary cards, the What We Learned page and the Vet Summary Sheet.

Is this a physical book?

No. It is a digital download. Nothing is posted to you. You read it on screen and print the pages you need at home or at a print shop.

Is the PDF fillable?

No. It is designed to be read on screen and completed by hand once printed. It is not an interactive fillable PDF.

Do I need to print all 58 pages?

No, and we would not suggest it.

The Start Here page sets out what to print first - five sheets cover your first fortnight - and what to print as each stage arrives. Much of the workbook is guidance you read once on screen rather than pages you write on.

How long does the process take?

Plan for about fifteen weeks. Roughly two weeks on the environment stage, one to two weeks choosing the food and moving across, eight weeks of elimination, then two to four weeks of structured testing - sometimes longer, depending on how the testing weeks go.

How much time will I need each day?

About ten minutes a day while you are tracking. The reading is front-loaded at the start of each stage; the daily part is filling in one row of that week's record sheet. It is short, but it works best done most days, because a record with gaps is harder to read later.

What if my veterinarian has already prescribed a therapeutic food trial?

Then follow your veterinarian's plan and use the workbook to record it. Do not change a prescribed diet in order to follow this book. The record sheets, itch score, checkpoint pages and Vet Summary Sheet all work the same way around a diet your veterinarian has selected.

Does this workbook diagnose food allergies?

No. It is an educational tracking tool. It helps you observe and record what you see in a consistent way, so that you and your veterinarian have organised information to work from. Only a veterinarian who has examined your dog can determine what is happening.

Can I use it outside Australia?

Yes. It is written in Australian English and set up for A4 paper - if you print on US Letter, choose fit to page or shrink to printable area and everything lands correctly, just fractionally smaller. Veterinary practice, food labelling rules and which meats are sold vary from country to country. Where this workbook and your local rules or your own veterinarian differ, follow your veterinarian and your local rules.

Can a veterinarian, trainer, nutrition professional or clinic use it with clients?

A consumer purchase is licensed for personal use with your own dogs. Using it with clients, handing out printed copies, or including it in a service or course requires a separate licence. If you work with dogs professionally and would like to use it that way, write to info@hemppet.com.au - there is a licence for that.
