HEMPPET for Senior Dogs

HEMPPET for Senior Dogs - HempPet.com.au

Can Hempseed oil supplements be useful for senior dogs?

The short answer is yes! Proper nutrition is important at every stage of your dog’s life … but it’s especially worthwhile to consider their nutritional needs in senior years. Just as humans develop more health conditions as they get older, dogs also experience issues particularly:

  • Reduced joint mobility and arthritis.
  • Digestion issues and reduced immune function
  • Cognitive and eyesight decline

When is your dog classed as a senior? A good starting point for most breeds is 7 years of age. While this may seem young to be considered a senior, for most breeds this is equivalent to roughly 50 human years. Large breeds such as Great Danes and German Shepard’s will fall into the senior category earlier and smaller breeds like Jack Russell Terriers a little later. It is always better to try and get ahead and prevent deterioration earlier.

At HEMPPET we believe a natural raw based diet that is complete and balanced with as little processing as possible lays the best foundation for your dog. This helps eliminate stress and inflammation. Our supplements are grown in Australia without the use of pesticides or chemicals and as minimal processing as possible to create a safe high quality supplement for your pet. If in doubt to your dog’s requirements we recommend talking to an integrative veterinarian or pet nutritionist.

MOBILITY SUPPLEMENT: Hemp Oil Blend with Hoki Fish Oil

HEMPPET has combined their trademarked Hemp Nectar, which has with MCT and fish oil to create a blend that is particularly suited to your senior pet. This formulation has an increased Omega 3 profile from plain hemp seed oil, offering a potent anti-inflammatory and joint support formula.

Ingredients

Hemp Nectar

Hemp Nectar has a higher content of nutrients and chlorophyll than normal hemp seed oil, so has additional benefits to normal hemp seed oil.

MCT Oil

Medium-Chain triglyceride (MCT) oil contains medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides. Due to their shorter length, MCTs are more easily digested than longer-chain fatty acids found in many other foods.

MCT oil has been extracted from coconut oil, and has potential benefits for energy, and also known for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, promoting healthy skin and coat

Hoki Fish Oil

Fish oil is a very important supplement you can add to your dog's diet, senior, adult or pup. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, provide widespread benefits for canines of any age.

Omega fatty acids, create important hormones that regulate blood flow and inflammation. However, they aren’t found naturally in the body. Omega-3 is found primarily in cold-water fish, shellfish, plant and nut oils, and flaxseed. Your dog needs omega-3 in their diet for several reasons.

Omega-3 also helps balance out omega-6 fatty acids, commonly found in processed foods and most grains. Since many dog food manufacturers use meat from corn-fed animals or refined oil (which are high in omega-6), dogs often have an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids in their diet. Your dog ends up with too much omega-6 and not nearly enough omega-3 fatty acids. And although we need omega-6 fatty acids, our modern diet often has too many. The body needs both in balance, and the same is true for dogs. DHA may also improve cognitive function in older dogs dealing with canine cognitive dysfunction.

100% natural, chemical free, pesticide free, perfect EFA balance, unique formula, high in EPA and DHA, omegas 3,6,9.

IMMUNE SUPPORT: Hemp Nectar

Hemppet’s IMMUNE SUPPORT Hemp Nectar is a trademark formula, it is carefully created through a special processing of cold-pressed hemp seeds. It is the result of the first pressing and is unfiltered. Hemp Nectar has a higher content of nutrients and chlorophyll than normal hemp seed oil, which is why it will appear thicker.

When is Hemp Nectar a good addition? Hemp Nectar perfectly complements a raw or natural based diet. It is all about balance and meat and most pet food is high in omega 6. When omega 6s greatly exceed the omega 3s, this can cause serious health issues such as unchecked inflammation in the body. If you are feeding a pre-made or commercial diet, even if the package claims to add omega 3s to the formula, omega 3 fats are highly unstable and
go rancid quickly with exposure to light, oxygen and freezing.

Hemp Nectar is also a good addition if you are already adding a quality fish oil supplement to your pets diet

Hemp Nectar contains:

  • Omega 3 in the form of ALA. The two main dietary forms of essential omega 3s that pets are often lacking are EPA and DHA. Your pet will also benefit from ALA. If your pet requires more EPA and DHA we recommend using the Hemp Oil Blend with Hoki Fish Oil.
  • A high concentration of the antioxidant Vitamin E – which is important for immunity, disease prevention, cell renewal and the functioning of many organs in the body.
  • Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) an omega 6 fatty acid not found in many plant sources and unlike other omega 6’s it has an anti-inflammatory effect in the body.
  • Chlorophyll, phytonutrients and pre-biotic fibre, which may help support immune function, healthy red blood cell production, improved nutrient absorption.

 Hemp Drops

As dogs age, pain, inflammation, and general aging processes can mean they require a little more support than an off the shelf supplement. HEMPPET also provides a natural alternative here through a veterinary only prescription full spectrum CBD product. If you feel this is necessary, speak to your veterinary practitioner that can help with this next step.
